These works are about the astounding
fecundity and diversity of nature, the obsessive creation, productivity, survival and
evolution of life forms and the interrelatedness of it all. Plant and animal, even the
earth and universe, are in a constant state of movement and flux, living, dying and
regenerating, eating and being eaten, forming and decomposing. I am fascinated by the idea
that we are all manifestations of the same energy or life force, infinite variations of
the same basic elements. I realized that all form is created as this energy acts on
matter, and that every event is influenced by every other event. I am in awe of nature's
ability to maintain order and consistent structures, while never creating two things
exactly alike. I want the forms in my work to feel like they are in the act of
becoming, changing, evolving.... or resisting.
Technically, I am interested in making watercolor and acrylic paints more visceral and
physical, with body and texture. (I deliberately choose watercolor pigments that granulate
heavily, separating in the wash, forming broken, organic textures.) There may be ten or
twenty layers of color in some areas of a paintings. Often I use patterns of pencil or
crayon lines or scratches between the layers to add energy or activity to the flat washes.
I like contrasting transparent, luminous color next to heavy opacity, or the tension of
the dry abrasive marks against wet, smooth washes.
The process of painting is a metaphor for life and creation. I think the content of the
work has to do with the idea that the universe is one vast continuum of 'cosmic soup' that
continues to unfold as it should, and that we, as matter and nature ourselves, are part of
it. Since I am a part of nature, authentic form results if I can allow my energy to flow
unfettered into my materials. I am like a collaborator who feeds matter and energy into
the work and watches the events that take place as nature creates a new reality. Often I
begin by just moving the wet color around on the paper, letting it puddle and flow. I am
trying to give the paint its own life and follow where it leads. These random processes,
intuitive and subconscious, generate shape and structure that are ambiguous, but have a
sense of truth and authenticity, revealing the hidden face of nature, symbols of the
ongoing creation.
